TWENTY-NINE

I make sure the kitchen door is sealed shut and that we are a safe distance away from it a couple of minutes later. Whatever the case, I can’t have Beverlyn getting out of bed and eavesdropping on us. But the funny thing is, as soon as Aunt Erykah starts pacing, I do a mental double-take on my decision and decide to be quiet.

“I need to know one thing, Bambi,” Erykah says, meandering towards me and throwing a tense gaze. “When did you know you had a stalker?”

Her tone of voice makes me silent. I realize that telling my aunt the whole AF004 backstory will make things complicated.

Years ago, when I was only eight, some rowdy teenage boys used to harass me in the neighbourhood. One month, when Beverlyn and Annie travelled to Vegas, Aunt Erykah was put on mother duty. All because of those boys, she forced me to stay cooped up inside the house for a week until she made sure they were bored enough to leave. What if, after telling Aunt Erykah, she hires her security to surround my house for twenty-four hours, and then my privacy becomes invaded every single day?

I meet Erykah’s gaze and fold my arms. “Just a month ago. That’s when I saw the messages.”

“Do you have them on your phone?”

“No. I deleted them all,” I lie again, already hoping for this conversation to end so I can walk out.

“Shit.” Erykah pulls out her pink phone and starts scrolling.

“I later found out that it was some troll. This dude has been posting weird comments on my YouTube for months. Now he’s sort of found himself in my DMs. I’ve decided to completely ignore him, and so far, so good, I think it’s working.”

I watch her thumb-swipe action cease as she lifts her gaze to me. “But, honey, is he dangerous? Do you feel this asshole could be a threat? Has he threatened to come after you or anything? Let me know now.”

“No. No. No, he’s not some scary, psychopathic killer or anything. Just a troll trying to rile me up. I’m sure he just wants attention.”

Erykah fixes her stare at me, and I get the feeling she may not be buying it. Does my aunt know me enough to tell whether I’m lying? I’m not sure because she’s such a cool aunt. Always helping me get out of trouble with my mother and even allowing me to be my little, stubborn self.

Despite the memories being a blur, I recall a few times when I was dragged along with Beverlyn and my aunts during their musical tours. I would break something on purpose, and when Beverlyn scolded me, Aunt Erykah was there to cover for me. This woman has been covering up my lies for so long that she can figure out the lie even before it comes out of my lips.

“Troll or stalker, just be careful,” Erykah says after uttering a short sigh. “These stalkers are not to be taken lightly, hon. Look, if anything gets serious, just let me know.
